2nd Peter: Session 4 "A Little Soul Music"

SESSION 4: “A Little Soul Music”

I’ve got good news today. You don’t have to stay like you are or live in misery. Things can be different. You can be different. God is working in you to make you and your life better!

Philippians 1:6 (NKJV) being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;

Philippians 2:12–13 (NKJV) Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

Notice here that salvation is something that we work out, or God works it out in us. It starts in our spirit and moves out into our soul and affects our bodies.

Three types of men...

TEXT 2 Peter 1:6 NKJV to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness,

These three are all connected and they all relate to our soul.

1.     Self-control: controlling our very self, who we are, our emotions, mind, and will… choosing to listen to God’s Spirit in my spirit and not my emotions, mind, and will…

Bill Gothard: Instant obedience to the initial promptings of the Holy Spirit!

Proverbs 14:12 NKJV There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death. (Also 16:25)

II Corinthians 10:3–6 NKJV For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

How do we determine what the spirit is saying?

1.     The Spirit of God… His Spirit bears witness with our spirit...

Romans 8:27 NKJV Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is…

Walk in the Spirit...
Spiritually discerned...
Spiritual judges all things...

2.     The Word of God… We are so blessed to live at this time when the Word is easily accessible and available!

Psalms 1:1-3 NKJV Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.

Psalms 19:7, 10-11 NKJV
7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul;

10 More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. 11 Moreover by them Your servant is warned, And in keeping them there is great reward.”
Psalms 40:8 NKJV I delight to do Your will, O my God, And Your law is within my heart.

Psalms 107:20 NKJV He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions.
Psalms 119:9, 11, 105, 133, 165 NKJV
9 How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.
11 Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
133 Direct my steps by Your word, And let no iniquity have dominion over me.
165 Great peace have those who love Your law, And nothing causes them to stumble.

Ezekiel 2:8-10 NKJV “But you, son of man, hear what I say to you. Do not be rebellious like that rebellious house; open your mouth and eat what I give you.” Now when I looked, there was a hand stretched out to me; and behold, a scroll of a book was in it. Then He spread it before me; and there was writing on the inside and on the outside, and written on it were lamentations and mourning and woe.”

Ezekiel 3:1-3 NKJV Moreover He said to me, “Son of man, eat what you find; eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Israel.” So I opened my mouth, and He caused me to eat that scroll. And He said to me, “Son of man, feed your belly, and fill your stomach with this scroll that I give you.” So I ate, and it was in my mouth like honey in sweetness.”

Jesus: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word...

John 15:3 NKJV You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.”
Ephesians 5:26 NKJV that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,

James 1:21 NKJV Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

Save: sozo, fullness of health…

Hebrews 4:12 NKJV For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Ephesians 6:17 NKJV And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

Bro. Jim: The Word becomes the sword when we draw it!

How do we draw the sword?  By application of the Word!

Hebrews 5:12-14 NKJV For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

2.     Endurance: a long obedience in the same direction.

Hebrews 10:36 NKJV For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise:

Hebrews 10:39 NKJV But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.

What is the result?

3.     Godliness: being like God.

God wants us to be like Him!  This was what Satan offered Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, the opportunity to be like God, but on their own.  We cannot be like Him without Him!

What do you desire today?
